Train With the Coach

How TriExpert Coach Mark McDonnell will train you to reach your pinnacle

Race faster, with my help

How? Through perfectly hand-tailored coaching!

If you've already done your internet research into the realm of private coaching for triathletes and distance runners, you've discovered that most professional coaches offer Programs, with Levels, at fixed monthly or quarterly rates. To me, this approach is the polar opposite of genuinely individualized coaching, and indicates that what you really get is a canned program with a thin veneer of customization.

I want to make you faster

And since the methods appropriate for you may have no overlap whatsoever with those that are best for another athlete, I only work on a "project plan" basis—affording you the ultimate in customization.

OK—specifics, please!

An intensely hands-on program might include the following:

  1. An interview—ideally face-to-face, but more likely by telephone, webcam conference, or even conceivably by email—to assess your current fitness. It would be ideal if I could review present and prior season training log(s). Additionally we should include some strength and range-of-motion benchmarking.
  2. Three training sessions (one per discipline), with special attention to analysis and refinement of technique—for triathletes, typically the "low-hanging fruit" can be gleaned with a single one hour session in each discipline. (Athletes, even those with many years in sport, typically enjoy significant upticks in performance with renewed attention to technique.)
  3. Consultation regarding choice of races for upcoming season, followed by workup of a custom training schedule to deliver you to peak performance for your key race.
  4. Providing an electronic means of logging/delivering data for each workout.
  5. Analysis of training logs followed by program modifications—initially weekly, tapering off to once every 4 weeks.

"Nice-to-haves"—services that are hardly critical but still valuable—include my attending races, leading supplemental training sessions, and further advice and communication on topics like fueling, recovery modalities, USA Triathlon rules (I'm a former official), arousal-control strategies, etc.

Because I've been doing what I do since 1993, I'm quite good at accurately estimating the time required for each of these elements. For a typical triathlete with a modest competitive history, the components of the program I've outlined above would take roughly 1) 2 hours, 2) 3 hours, 3) 4 hours, 4) 1 hour, and 5) 1 hour per "unit" (that is, weekly at first, et cetera).

I charge athletes $90/hour for private coaching (a rate that's unchanged since 2001, by the way). I bill by the minute (for example, if I tweaked a schedule and it took 9 minutes, @$1.50/minute that'd run you $13.50) and show your running balance at the end of every email.

I never work with a contract since I want it to be painless to cease working together if the relationship proves unsatisfactory to either or us. (Although once in a great while I've been tempted, I have yet to "fire" an athlete.)

I prefer to receive a starting retainer in the amount of the anticipated cost per month of the services anticipated; that is, if we estimate that from Day One until the end of a 6 month season you'll pay me $1440, I'll ask you for $240.

I am exceedingly prompt in returning any monies held in case I cease to render services. (I also never withhold services if athletes are slightly late in paying invoices.)

If you've made it this far, I'm guessing you're interested, but may have further questions. C'mon, call me!
